Joseph M. Bocheński on the Meaning of Life
Abstract
In the text On The Meaning of Life, Bocheński provides an analysis of the term “meaning of life” and argues against some expectations and beliefs held by pessimists, who think that life does not make sense (Sartre’s existentialism, “havelism”). The starting point for Bocheński is a conviction that the meaning of life is an individual matter and that someone’s life makes sense if at a given moment the person thinks that it is worthwhile for him/her to live. This sense arises when someone is striving for a goal, or is enjoying something. A characteristic feature of Bocheński’s approach was a belief, that a meaningful life is not a life subordinated to one main goal, and that it is impossible to put forward a general thesis about the lack of life’s meaning without falling into collision with experience. In my article I analyse Bocheński’s statements in the context of Tadeusz Czeżowski’s and Thomas Nagel’s views.
