Totalitarianism as Contextualism – on the Application Fr. Joseph M. Bocheński’s Research on Ideology to Modern Public Debate
Abstract
Usually the formal sign of totalitarianism in a discourse admits the presence of the exclusive criterion of promotion statements. In this paper, we come to a conclusion, leaning on Fr. Bocheński’s views, that epistemological totalitarianism is most likely based on the subject’s evasion of the recognition of one criterion for the formulation of sights defined here as heuristic rule, together with the basic dogma. A plethora of heuristic rules and basic dogmas, depending on social and epistemic context, that is the structure of skepticism, and particularly contextualism, actually defines the presence of totalitarianism in judgments, supposing the appearance of rough logical errors, in an assertion of improbable preconditions, or an explanation of the basis errors and uncertainties of classifications. The given approach seems useful to find-out the role of ideology in modern public debate with the application of Fr. Bochenski’s scientific operating time concerning the Soviet ideology now embodied in the “ideology of the Belarussian state”.
Keywords: conception of truth, contextualism, skepticism, totalitarianism in epistemology, ideology, heuristic rules, crisis in explanation.
