Abstract

The Kingdom of God as a Realization of the Idea of Humanity in Zygmunt Krasiński’s and August Cieszkowski’s Concepts

Zygmunt Krasiński and August Cieszkowski pursued the theme of Kingdom of God as a historical realization of the idea of humanity and stated that the latter would be a fulfilment of Christianity in the social area. Two mutually connected sentiments are basic for their thought: the conviction that the social life had to be encompassed by the principles of Christianity and the conviction that the idea of progress should be Christianized. The humanity understood in a religious way only, which means – as the Kingdom of God - could be thought of not as a formal brotherhood and an abstract, non-empirical ideal, but as a concrete, historically attainable state of the whole human society. The aim of this article is to point out the reasons that influenced this messianic diagnosis and to characterize this point of view shared by both authors and its consequences.

Keywords: humanity, Kingdom of God, eternal life, messianism, historiosophy, secularization.
